It's simply hard to miss: the opulent new baseball stadium emerging against the backdrop of the Miami skyline. As the Marlins prepare to open the 2012 season in their new home, it provides a unique opportunity to remind the community that only ten years ago in 2001, we lost a classic baseball stadium of a different style through neglect and demolition. To convey the importance of preservation, a true understanding cannot be gained by focusing solely on those sites and structures that have been successfully saved for future generations to enjoy but, must also reflect on those architectural and historical treasures that have been lost. It was with this belief that I recently began to research the old Miami Stadium, also known as Bobby Maduro Miami Stadium. Whether it was pure luck or significant coincidence, I happened across a wonderful first-hand account about the beauty and history of the Miami Stadium as told by Kurt Schweizer. I could not think of a better way to bring this historic ballpark back to life than through the words and pictures provided by Kurt; Preservation Miami is truly grateful that he has allowed us to share them with you. The article, originally published online in 2004, has been abridged to better fit the format and focus of our website. We hope you enjoy!
